Dementia Services: SHIELD Project

The Carer Supporter Programme aims to improve the health, wellbeing and quality of life of those with dementia and their carers.

It is part of SHIELD (Support at Home; Interventions to Enhance Life in Dementia Research Programme), where new carers are matched with more experienced family carers.

The Carer Supporters help people new or moving into a new phase of caring, feel more confident in looking after their relative suffering from dementia. Supporters make a real difference to the lives of carers by providing a listening ear, moral support, and the necessary encouragement to engage in other resources available to them. Carer Supporters are trained to advise newer family carers to be aware of their own health and social needs as well as those of their relative.

Matched relationships are monitored over a ten month period to measure the psycho-social and therapeutic benefits of a peer support programme.
